While I was handling Dom Pedro
\nI got at the thing that divides the race between men who are
\nFor singing \u201cTurkey in the straw\u201d or
\n\u201cThere is a fountain filled with blood\u201d\u2014
\n(Like Rile Potter used to sing it over at Concord).
\nFor cards, or for Rev. Peet\u2019s<\/a> lecture on the holy land;
\nFor skipping the light fantastic, or passing the plate;
\nFor Pinafore, or a Sunday school cantata;
\nFor men, or for money;
\nFor the people or against them.
\nThis was it: Rev. Peet and the Social Purity Club,
\nHeaded by Ben Pantier\u2019s wife<\/a>,
\nWent to the Village trustees,
\nAnd asked them to make me take Dom Pedro
\nFrom the barn of Wash McNeely<\/a>, there at the edge of town,
\nTo a barn outside of the corporation,
\nOn the ground that it corrupted public morals.
\nWell, Ben Pantier<\/a> and Fiddler Jones<\/a> saved the day\u2014
\nThey thought it a slam on colts.<\/p>\n
