Selling shoes and gingham,<br \/>\nFlour and bacon, overalls, clothing, all day long<br \/>\nFor fourteen hours a day for three hundred and thirteen days<br \/>\nFor more than twenty years.<br \/>\nSaying \u201cYes\u2019m\u201d and \u201cYes, sir\u201d, and \u201cThank you\u201d<br \/>\nA thousand times a day, and all for fifty dollars a month.<br \/>\nLiving in this stinking room in the rattle-trap \u201cCommercial.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd compelled to go to Sunday School, and to listen<br \/>\nTo the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvdpoetry.com\/spoonriveranthology\/spoon-river-anthology\/rev-abner-peet\/\">Rev. Abner Peet<\/a> one hundred and four times a year<br \/>\nFor more than an hour at a time,<br \/>\nBecause <a href=\"https:\/\/pvdpoetry.com\/spoonriveranthology\/spoon-river-anthology\/thomas-rhodes\/\">Thomas Rhodes<\/a> ran the church<br \/>\nAs well as the store and the bank.<br \/>\nSo while I was tying my neck-tie that morning<br \/>\nI suddenly saw myself in the glass:<br \/>\nMy hair all gray, my face like a sodden pie.<br \/>\nSo I cursed and cursed: You damned old thing<br \/>\nYou cowardly dog! You rotten pauper!<br \/>\nYou Rhodes\u2019 slave!
