{"id":881,"date":"2022-02-06T14:19:39","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T14:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pvdpoetry.com\/spoonriveranthology\/?page_id=881"},"modified":"2022-02-06T15:23:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T15:23:49","slug":"silas-dement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pvdpoetry.com\/spoonriveranthology\/spoon-river-anthology\/silas-dement\/","title":{"rendered":"Silas Dement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was moon-light, and the earth sparkled<br \/>\nWith new-fallen frost.<br \/>\nIt was midnight and not a soul abroad.<br \/>\nOut of the chimney of the court-house<br \/>\nA gray-hound of smoke leapt and chased<br \/>\nThe northwest wind.<br \/>\nI carried a ladder to the landing of the stairs<br \/>\nAnd leaned it against the frame of the trap-door<br \/>\nIn the ceiling of the portico,<br \/>\nAnd I crawled under the roof and amid the rafters<br \/>\nAnd flung among the seasoned timbers<br \/>\nA lighted handful of oil-soaked waste.<br \/>\nThen I came down and slunk away.<br \/>\nIn a little while the fire-bell rang\u2014<br \/>\nClang! Clang!
