Interested in being guided on how to write your own poetry?

Come down to the Waterplace Park where two area poets will help you find a topic, craft a poem and, at the end, you can use a typewriter to turn your poem into a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

It’s helpful if you can register ahead of time, but drop-ins are also welcome. This program is appropriate for poets of all experience levels and ages.

Instructor Bios:

Alicia Pratt (She/They)

Alicia is a poet hailing from Texas. She studied Creative Writing at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and now works in a language justice non-profit. Her favorite poems to write are poems from parents to their kids. She drinks filthy gin martinis with extra olives, thinks Fleabag was a cultural reset, and prefers oceans to lakes. She has two cats who she affectionately calls gremgels (gremlin-angel hybrids) and looks forward to having many more. In her free time, she likes to take walks in the park–especially after a nice rain.

Wheeler Cowperthwaite

Wheeler is a journalist, poet and food writer. While he’s written poetry for years, he only turned to poetry on demand during the pandemic, setting up with a typewriter on the Pedestrian Bridge. He uses his professional interviewing skills to coax details out of subjects for poems written on demand.

Other Notes:

  • This is a family-friendly event open to children and adults of all ages.
  • There will be no bathrooms available at this event.
  • Some terrain in Waterplace Park is uneven, including: cobblestone walkways and short flights of stairs.
  • The rain date for this program is July 20th. In case of rain or other inclement weather, we will notify participants by email and social media no later than the morning of if we need to postpone the program.

The Downtown Providence Park Network works across nine distinct downtown public spaces, cultivating enduring connection, pride, and vibrancy throughout the generations. Each space has its own personality, assets, needs and priorities–together, they form a connected loop. The Park Network was created in partnership with The City of Providence, The Providence Foundation, The Providence Parks Department, I-195 Redevelopment District, and all of the community organizations enlivening our downtown parks.
